In August 2015 I hope to stand on the Roof of Africa and watch the sun rise. Why do I want to climb Kilimanjaro? I have a couple of reasons. Firstly, just to see if I can do it! Since surviving breast cancer in 2008 I’ve celebrated being alive by setting myself a charity challenge every year. Some of these challenges are close to home such as a 10k run and a sky dive while others are more exotic and far flung like trekking the Great Wall of China and the Inca Trail in Peru. And while all that is very noble I must confess my other reason may be quite selfish! What I love most about climbing a mountain, especially with a group of people I don’t know, is the freedom it gives me. I am not wife, mother, daughter, sister and all those other roles I play in life. I am just me. The mountain just takes me the way I am and in doing so I meet myself. The self I forget about in the midst of the rough and tumble of life. I’ve read somewhere that ‘Uhuru’ is the Swahili word for freedom and I can think of no better reason to climb Kilimanjaro. Also, I’m a mum with five children……it’s ridiculous the things I’ll do just to get a bit of me time!!!
